Beaches and WWF Oases

The untamed beaches of Maremma testify so eloquently to the wildness of this land, with shores that stretch out for miles and bounded by sandy dunes, century-old pine forests and Mediterranean bush.
Bathing establishments are very few but you will find various free access points to the sea where you can enjoy a swim and the freedom of true wide open spaces.

The nearest beach is "WIND BEACH", only 3 km far, situated in a locality called Puntata, between Fonteblanda and Talamone. This beach truly recalls the cult surf movie "Big Wednesday" with its wide choice of sports amenities, such as windsurfing, kitesurfing and many other activities. The thermal wind can reach speeds up to 25 knots, but thanks to the particular territorial conformation, waves are absent within the first two miles from shore. Moreover, the water is shallow up to 200 metres from shore, thus providing favourable conditions for any kind of water sports activities.

"BAGNO delle DONNE" (Women's beach) is located in Talamone and surrounded by an imposing cliff and a stretch of wild land overlooked by the rock tower named after the town. The gravel beach, situated at the bottom of a steep staircase (the only access point), is equipped with beach umbrellas and deckchairs. This resort is renowned for the beauty of its seabed and crystal clear waters where you can enjoy your swim in complete safety under the supervision of the lifeguard Daniele.

The OSA beach, only 7 km away, extends from the Fonteblanda promontory down to Albinia, as far as the mouth of the Albegna River.

The GIANNELLA beachThe beaches of the Giannella tombolo (strip of land) stretch out for 8 km between Albinia and Porto Santo Stefano. The provincial road S.P. 36 runs lengthwise through the sandy dune (like the Feniglia dune) and branches off into various access points to the seaside. The beach ( free for the most part), is equipped with bathing establishments and spacious parking places.

The FENIGLIA beach
Located 20 km south of Talamone, it is one of the most beautiful beaches of Tuscany. It stretches out lengthwise for about 7 Km and links the Ansedonia promontory to the slopes of Mount Argentario.
The beach is lined with a magnificent pine forest (a protected area known as the Feniglia Tombolo) that runs along its entire length and crossed by an unsurfaced road, ideal for walks and bike rides. You can easily spot deer and occasionally, wild boars. If you bring along some carrots and bread and get near enough, you can feed the deer directly from your hand, as long as you keep calm and patient. You will find pathways that lead to the seashore every kilometre or so.

PLAYA LA TORBA (to me, the most beautiful ever!!!)
This beach stretches eastwards from the Ansedonia promontory and is characterized by a type of sand that varies in colour from dark grey to black, due to the abundance of ferrous metals in the subsoil, more evident in the eastern part of the coast within the municipality of Capalbio. As you move towards the Burano Lake and the mouth of the Chiarone River, the sands vary from dark grey to gold. The entire coastline is rugged and wild, characterized by typical Mediterranean bush and vegetation that develops on dunes and rear dunes.

WWF OASES

The oases of the Orbetello lagoon and Burano Lake are part of the 80 Protected Areas scattered all over Italy, safeguarded and managed by the WWF with the purpose of protecting endangered wildlife and its habitat

The area surrounding the oasis of the ORBETELLO LAGOON extends over a very important migration route that represents one of the main wintering grounds for birds that come to nest in Europe. The lagoon, the sandy tombolo, the bush, the pine forest and the cultivated fields constitute an uncontaminated environment that hosts a rich variety of fauna composed of more than 200 aquatic bird species, such as ducks, herons, grebes and seagulls.
To allow everyone to admire the Oasis, WWF organizes guided tours along "nature trails" with observation points and huts provided with explanatory signs.  After obtaining an access permit, the oasis can be visited on Saturdays and Sundays from 9.30 a.m. to 3.00 p.m. (from September 1st  to April 30th - free entry for WWF members).

Oasis of the BURANO LAKE
The Burano lake used to one of the most renowned hunting grounds of Maremma. Then WWF appeared on the scene and things changed for the better; the birds are now tranquil, safe, and most of all, undisturbed. Today everyone can admire them and enjoy the breathtaking surroundings, such as the enchanting lagoon, the coastal dune and the Mediterranean bush..."
The  "Burano Lake" is actually a coastal salt pond, relic of an ancient lake. It is linked to the sea by a canal, artificial in part, which is opened at specific times according to managing requirements. The water expanse, with a surface of 140 hectares and about 1 m deep, spreads out over an area of 410 hectares and is the first oasis created by WWF.
The area is extremely rich in flora with more than 600 different species and a fauna composed of 274 bird species, such as herons, flamingos and a wide variety of predators, amongst which the marsh harrier, the fish-hawk and the lanner falcon. Many mammalians are also present in the area, such as the porcupine, the badger, the fox, the weasel, the beech marten and the rare fitchew (or polecat).
